This striking mask comes from Manam Island. Manam is an enormous volcanic cone that juts straight out of the ocean at the mouth of the Ramu River in Papua New Guinea’s Madang Province. The piece has the classic deep set slanted eyes and a long curved nose. The mask is brightly painted with white, red and blue western trade paint. As most of you probably know western paints were quickly adopted in the village for masks due to the paint's brightness and durability. The reverse has a bite stick and a brown patina over remains of white western paint. The mask is a classic and powerful example that dates to the 1930/40s, is 17 ½" in height and sells for $3200.
