This is a classic Middle Sepik or Sepik Plains figurative suspension hook. Such hooks were lashed high in the rafters of a ceremonial house and string bags holding ritual paraphernalia were slung over the hooks at the base of the figure. This example has a classic composition with an oversized head resting on a powerfully built torso atop short, stout legs. As with many older Sepik figures there is a slight movement from the head to the neck to the body and legs. The piece has an aged brown patina, nicely pierced nose and ears and shows some glossy highlights on the top surface of the hooks where the straps of the bags would have rested. The suspension hook is 21" in height, dates to the 1930/40s. sold
