I am always amazed at how certain objects travel within Papua New Guinea. I collected this obviously Huon Gulf betel mortar down in the southern Oro Province coast in Collingwood Bay—hundreds of miles from Umboi Island where this mortar was probably produced. It has the classic kneeling female figure with distended earlobes. The bowl has a nice carved on motif on the side and a decorated rim—fairly unusual. The piece has good age, brown glossy patina, dates to the 1940s, stands 9" tall. sold
