The spirit faces made from plaited cane that are attached to the cut and polished green turban sea shells by the Yangoru Boiken people to be used as bride prices are some of the most striking forms of traditional currency in Papua New Guinea. This "masalai" spirit face has round, tubular eyes, remains of white and red pigments and a nice coif of cassowary feathers. The talipoon face is 14 ½" tall with the feathers standing out a few inches more—the piece dates to the 1940s and sells for $900. Questions?
