his elegant pre-contact, stone-carved drum from the Torricelli Mountains is illustrated in my catalog "The Art of West Sepik" on page 17. The drum comes from the area south of Yilli Village and is called "wakin" in the local language. What is special about this piece is the beautifully carved handle that both expresses the ability and competence of the carver while as the same time shows the absence of carving on the rest of the drum to be a conscious aesthetic choice. The piece is 25" in height, dates to the 19th century. sold
