This wood food bowl from the Asmat area of Southern New Guinea is unusual for its free-form design with figure carved in high relief. While Asmat art is renowned for its wonderful organic motifs this example seems a bit more loose and inventive than most. The bowl comes from a respected Santa Fe private collector who purchased it from a dealer over thirty years ago. Judging from the patina and design I would say the bowl dates to the 1940s—which is early for Asmat material. The piece is 24 ½" in height and sells for $2800. Questions?
