This charming little guy is a plaited cane yam mask/headdress from the southern Abelam area. This would have adorned the top of a ritually-gown long yam during its public display and exchange. The mask is very old with a thick dark brown patina from generations of use. I like how the handle doubles as a wide slit mouth that gives the piece an engaging expression. There are strong remains of black cassowary feathers out the top. The piece is 12" in height, dates to the 1920's. sold
