This ancient piece is the figurative terminal from a Manam Island slit-gong "garamut" drum. This example is far older than any other I have encountered. The head is overly large with the eyes pointing down—in many areas of New Guinea the gaze of one’s ancestral spirit was considered too powerful to behold. The arms are thin and attenuated the legs short and stout. The piece dates to the late 19th century, is 14 ˝" in height. sold
