This ancient piece is the figurative terminal from a Manam Island slit-gong "garamut" drum. This example is far older than any other I have encountered. The head is overly large with the eyes pointing down—in many areas of New Guinea the gaze of one’s ancestral spirit was considered too powerful to behold.
