This is a rare form of traditional currency from the remote Sarawaget Mountain area, near Kabwum in Morobe’s Huon Peninsula. Called "poli" these are composed of small nassa shells sewn onto a coconut fiber backing. This is an excellent example for its definitively figurative design and its imaginative use of differing sizes of nassa shells to create a vibrant texture. The piece is 13" in height, dates to the early 20th century and sells for $1000. Questions?
