This is a wonderful, top-quality April River shield. It has an old organic shape, concave reverse with thick sides and a bone handle—I assume cassowary bone. The front has the classic vertical row of smiling ancestral faces with strong remains of yellow, red, white and black pigments. The shield has great age, great aesthetics and all the integrity of an early example of New Guinea art. The piece is large at 74" in height, dates to the 1930's. sold
