The shields from the Simbai area of the Schrader Mountain range within Madang Province normally conform to an easily recognizable style. Yet this example with its simple and elegant composition is of a rare sub style. It is of course a pre-contact, stone-carved shield with a thick encrusted patina. Notice the wonderful scalloped adze marking on the reverse. The shield dates to the late 19th/early 20th century, is 36 3/8” (92.4 cm) in height and sells for $6500. Questions?
