Judging from the size I would say this paddle was used by a woman. It is beautifully carved with a fish design on the blade and a full male spirit figure at the top of the shaft. From the figurative style I would place this paddle in the Aitape region of Papua New Guinea’s northwest coast or even further to the west towards Humboldt Bay. The figure has a wonderful body with a nice pudgy lower torso and feet that morph into bird’s heads. The paddle is ex. Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, is 63 ½” (161.4 cm) in height, dates to the early 20th century or before and sells for $7500. Questions?
