Here is another rarely seen New Guinea art object from the Rai Coast—that stretch of coast between Astrolabe Bay and the Huon Peninsula. This is a beautiful lime gourd and spatula adorned with small shell beads and a large ring of clam shell at the top. It comes from the Jolika Collection of Marcia and John Friede, is. ex. Marc Assayag and is illustrated in my latest catalog as figure 135. It dates to the early/mid 20th century (one would assume earlier except there is an old Japanese coin embedded with the shells), is 18” (45.8 cm) in height and sells for $2800. Questions?
