The ladles from Manam Island off the coast from the mouth of the Ramu River have a very distinct style—with handles comprised of stack ancestral faces. At the base a section of coconut cup would have been attached—no longer extant on the present example. But of this type this example is excellent with six beautifully carved ancestral spirit faces. Notice the great volumes, sensitive features, pierced noses and wonderful aged glossy patina. The piece comes from the collection of Peter Kohler, Ascona, Switzerland, is 32-5/8" (82.8cm) in height, dates to the early 20th century or before and sells for $2600. Questions?
