Shell trumpets such as this were found in nearly every house on the Schouten Islands. These were used to signal family members working in the gardens or fishing the nearby coastal waters. The trumpets were kept indoors, hanging from the rafters above the cooking fire and thus older ones develop thick black smoky patinas over the decades. This example dates to the early 20th century, is 12 ¾” (32.2 cm) in height and sells for $950. Questions?
