Funny how things turn up. This old Solomon Island cane shield had been abandoned in the attic, among other objects and artifacts from the 1880s, in a house being purchased by the Catholic University in Washington DC. It is extremely finely constructed with the classic frigate bird motif at the base. This style of shield comes from the western Solomon Islands. Notice the two loops on the reverse where the string grip would have been attached. The shield dates to the late 19th century, is 27 3/8” (69.9 cm) in height and sells for $3800. Questions?
