The spirit boards from the Purari Delta area of the Papuan Gulf are known locally as Kwoi. The present example is a large, old and striking example. It is clearly late 19th century with the design carved in high relief and a prominent nose—pierced of course. The board comes from a Massachusetts private collector who acquired it from Leendert van Lier in 1983--who reportedly purchased it from James Hooper in 1947. The piece is late 19th century, 43” (109.3 cm) in height and the price is available upon request. Questions?
